Let's celebrate Earth Day!
Updated: Aug 3
Did you know that it’s Earth Day and it turns 55 today? 🌎
It takes place every year on April 22nd and was created back in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a passionate US senator and environmentalist, alongside Denis Hayes, a Harvard University graduate student.
Their growing concern about our planet's health motivated them to create a day that would get people involved and taking action. On the first Earth day over 20 Million people across the US went on the streets to demonstrate. In the 1990s Earth Day became a global event and ever since brings people of all ages together to raise awareness of the climate crisis.
Today, this day feels more important than ever.
Why? Here are just a few eye-opening reasons:
🔥 Without immediate action on greenhouse gas emissions, our world is heading toward warming by 3.2 degrees above pre-industrial levels by 2100 - potentially catastrophic for life as we know it (source: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)
🌡️ The last decade was the hottest on record (World Meteorological Organization)
🌪️ Environmental risks now make up half of the top 10 global threats in the Global Risk Report 2025, including extreme weather, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem collapse
How can we actually make a difference?
I know, these facts can feel overwhelming and honestly leave us feeling helpless or anxious. I've been there too.
But here's the good news: we can transform those worries into positive change! Let's use them as fuel to get moving!
The theme of Earth Day 2025 is: “Our Power, our Planet!” The power of the people has always been at the heart of Earth Day. So let’s act together.
Here are some simple things each of us can work into our everyday lives:
📚 Learn more about sustainability. There are so many fantastic books and podcasts out there waiting to inspire you
🌱 Join or donate to local environmental initiatives. Trust me, there are amazing grassroots movements in every community just waiting for your support
🥗 Eat more veggies and less meat. Or even better, take the plunge and try going vegetarian
🚲 Walk or hop on your bicycle instead of driving. And yes, even choosing stairs over the elevator makes a real difference!
👕 Shop second-hand for clothes and choose natural fibers over synthetics whenever possible
💬 Share these ideas with friends and family who might be looking for somewhere to start
By taking these small steps, we create ripples that combine into powerful waves of change.
And remember that we need to celebrate this beautiful Planet every single day. We can start with the choices we make.
